Homebirth. Does the title elicit a mirage of incense and dream catchers in your head? A lady of the night in a cloak? We are happy to oblige any and all of those stereotypes, however modern day home birth can be so much more!

Here in Tampa we are so lucky to have a great collaborative care community of midwives, obstetrical practices, chiropractors, pediatricians, doulas, acupuncturists and other support professionals for expecting families. As Florida Licensed Midwives we are licensed by the Florida Department of Health, operate legally with the ability to carry medications and life saving equipment, and we are required to carry malpractice insurance.

Some families look for midwifery care and homebirth in particular because they want to be in the drivers seat of their care. Some find us because they have had a previous care experience that left them looking for more. Some families find us because they know pregnancy and birth can be a normal, psychological process that they want respected. Some folks may find us because they have been marginalized in our current impersonal, for profit health care system and want to be treated as the individual they are. Whatever the reason you are looking to plan a homebirth, know that we support and respect your decision!

At Barefoot Birth, we are currently the only homebirth or birthing center practice in the Tampa area consistently using a 2 midwife model of care based on the European model used for decades. We believe 2 midwives at every birth offers families the highest level of care and expertise. We have remained a homebirth only practice over the last 6 years vs a birthing center because we truly believe that for normal, low risk birthing families that birth belongs at home whenever possible. It is important to us to preserve that traditional midwifery model and protect the birthing space for our families. We strive to create a high touch, low tech environment for our families that offers the all routine standard of care options any obstetrical practice might offer with a strong focus on informed consent and refusal for our clients.

If you are homebirth or midwifery-care-curious we invite you to attend one of our monthly Meet the Midwives nights at The Community Roots Collective. Meet the Midwives night happens every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7pm and includes everyone from our practice in an intimate gathering. We’d love to sit with you face to face anytime and answer the hard questions (no matter how long your list is!) Feel free to contact us via the web here or by phone.
